1. James I./Coney Island Life/ author
My metaphorical interpretation of this poem is that the poem is like a comparison to a game. I think this poem has a negative ring to it. Reading through this poem I felt, that the author had his dreams and inspirations. Then he lost his hope, and is trying to regain it.
2. The authors life was dramatic, to me because he compares it to a roller coaster, "having lived a coney island life on roller coasters ups and downs." His life was not consistent.
3. The authors life was also ironic, to me because he compared something in his like, as dolls. From what I was reading, he said it like it was something bad. It was something that he had to show for after all his hard work in life. "Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for.
4. Then theres the last part of the poem that tops off everything that makes me believe that the author isn't that optimistic. But still has some kind of hope because he's considering options in life. "I take perhaps my last ride on this planet-carosel and ask how many more times around I have to catch that brass-ring-sun before the game is up." As you can see he knows that his time is limited, but he still considers the fact that he can still catch the brass-ring-sun before time is up.
5. Overall, the author compares his view on life which I interpreted to be used up, tiring, and pessimistic, to a familiar place to where he grew up. Coney Island.

Portfolio Post
Agenda:
1) Let whoever of my parents know what I am going to present to them, and let them know their role
2) Open up http://www.wix.com/adara_pineda/portfolio
3) Go over each "In my own words" words
4) Then present them my pieces of evidences that I believe meets the standard
Reflection:
One of the achievements that I am most proud of for the past semester is being able to find multiple evidence points for each idea that I had to support my thesis. The first time I did that, it was on the "Chunky Paragraph" assignment. Looking back on that assignment, my "quote and commentary" chart was unorganized and not thought out well at all. There were more ideas than evidences. Because of that I got a 3-. The grade that I am not aiming for. Knowing that this stratgy is going to be used a lot, and is important I knew I had to work on it. Now I have a better understanding on what to do for "quote and commentary" charts. I know what to look for in evidences that would support my thesis.
One of the major challenges that I had this semester was being able to understand the assignments given to me, and being able to benefit and learn from it. Somtimes I didn't understand what I was doing on some assignments. But with help and the strategy of asking questions, I got where I needed to be. Procrastination was always a problem, but I learned to be a wiser at using my time because I was tired of rushing assignments.
My goals for next quarter is to able to write more smoothly. I really enjoy reading and doing creative writing, but sometimes I can't explain what I want to say. It's like i'll have ideas that would inspire me to write profusely but i'll get stuck. So hopefully i'll be able to learn what I need to to improve my writing.
Mom or dad, please comment on my blog answering these questions.

KC3 Research Draft: Tourism
Even though Hawaii's economy is lucky enough to have a huge amount of income come from tourism, taxes on tourism are slowly getting higher to make up for government spending. Hawaii should leave the tax alone instead of raising it so the prices won't scare away tourist.
So far Hawaii isn't having a problem with tourism because tourist are beginning to spend more. In the first 9 months of 2011, the total visitor expenditures increased 14.7%. The recent recording on how we're doing is as of September of 2011 where the total visitor spending rose 19.7% while visitor arrivals were up 4%. As you can see, our tourism economics are doing pretty well. The Hawaii tourism authority predicts that in 2012 the growth rates of visitor arrivals and visitor expenditures are expected to go up even more! But according to the locale new a few nights ago, Hawaii is relying on tourist from Asia. Counties like Japan and Korea is what's supporting us now. Obama is suppose to discuss with Asian counties on how we can help Hawaii's economic stability. But the thing is, these tourist will continue to come if they don't realize that they are spending much more than they should, and could be spending less in other locations.
The Senate thinks it's smart to raise taxes a little bit to even out the government spending. No one get's hurt right? In 2009 the senate approved on a tourist tax increase on thing such as hotel rooms. Hotel occupancy was down to 60% says hotel executives. "Raising tourist tax is the worst idea". Why? We can't afford to do things like raise taxes like that because Hawaii isn't a business destination like San Francisco and New York. Nearly everyone who comes to Hawaii is a "discretionary dollar", so making them feel that the money they have is worth less than is ridiculous. We should be making them feel that the money they're spending is pretty much fair to what they could be spending in California for example, but they get a different experience here. Basically we don't want to tourist feel that Hawaii is too expensive for them to come here, or that they are getting ripped-off. States like Texas, Illinois, and Massachusetts have a sales tax of 6.25% while lucky states like Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware, and Alaska have no sales tax. Hawaii has a sales tax of 4% on everything. Even though it sounds low, some economists think it's like having a 10-12% sales tax because things are taxed multiple things down the line. Things in Hawaii are very expensive because everything is shipped here.
Tourism effects our economy much more than think it does, in fact tourism effects 75% of all jobs in Hawaii. If something goes wrong and less visitors come or less spend money, the people of Hawaii will suffer from it. There about 46,000 people in Hawaii who are out of work. If these tourist go elsewhere taxpayers will be left with yet another budget deficit.
Tourism in Hawaii might seem to be doing well right now. But if there's something that makes the tourist feel that they could be better off spending their money somewhere else, it's going to make a negative impact on Hawaii's Economy.

Querencia DRAFT
Querencia Draft
“It’s Saturday! You know what to do!”. Chores. I wake up from my ten plus hour slumber and I drag my self to the bathroom floor, still cold from the early morning weather. Gaaah, I have to sweep the floor, then mop it, do a hundred loads of laundry, fold the laundry, wash the car, clean my jungle of a room, then my pile of homework. Wait, didn’t mama call us yesterday?
I run to the living room where my dad was watching a recording of Threes Company. “Daaad! Remember Mama Bella called us yesterday?”. My dad puts his thinking face on trying to recall of my grandma actually called us, or if I was trying to get out of doing my chores. “Oh, she did call. Get ready by 12, okay? Don’t forget to do your chores right after you get home.”. “Yes dad.” I say calmly. I make my way outside where my sister is hanging the laundry that was being washed probably when I was asleep. “Get ready, Mama is going to pick us up!”. A smile ran across her face. I don’t know if it was because we were going out with grandma, or that our chores would be postponed.
I prop my face on my head as I use my other hand to change the channels. Boring, boring, boring, then I hear a honk by my drive way. “Mama’s here!” my sister yells to get my attention. “Bye mom, bye dad.” I say as I kiss them goodbye. “Don’t forget to--- yes dad!”
I fix myself before I open my grandma’s cool dark blue box car that was new at that time. I have to look my best since I see my grandma once in a while. I don’t want her last memory of me to be dirty and stinky. My sister and I kiss our grandma on the cheek and we drive off. “How’s school?” is how my grandma starts of the conversation. I get lost in the conversation about school, church and anything new, while oldies music play in the background. I forget about my troubles that I left at home. But I happen to hear “we’re going to Liliha Bakery for lunch. You like?” My face lit up right away.
I’m the kind of person who loves food. It’s especially the dished that bring you back. Liliha Bakery was the place that my grandma used to bring me almost every day after I was done with pre-school. As we get out of the cool dark blue dark box car, the three of us enter the small and cozy environment. We take out seats and order the usual. Teriyaki chicken and loco moco, while grandma has an interesting chat with our server about her vacation to Vegas. Along the long diner style table are people that live down the streets to the people that drive far distances to experience the joyful environment. Once in a while when I’m enjoying my meal, I get “Is this Addie and Kayla? Wow they are so big now, I remember...” and “I haven’t seen you two in a long time, you should some here often.”. Grandma looks at them with a bright smile-- proud that we are her grandchildren. Every time that I'm here, I always feel like I'm in a second home. Every bite, smell and touch reminds me of a simpler time where the worries that I had was if the teacher caught me making trouble to my friends, and the only feeling of hurt was when I fell of my tiny tricycle. I completely forget the papers due, the chores undone, and reality that everyone tries to hide from.

Comfort food draft
After being assigned "Roots and Recipes" I had to think long and hard about what food I would choose. There were a lot of food; adobo, sinigang, lumpia, the basic filipino foods, really. But I had to think of a food that came close to home, which was kare-kare! Usually people who consider whatever they choose as their comfort food has been eating it since they were a kid. Actually, I wasn't introduced to this delectable delight until I was in middle school.
My family and I were at our usual filipino restaurant, Max's just to treat ourselves. Once you entered the bright colored atmosphere you could tell you were at a Filipino restaurant. The aroma of the different kinds of spices that lingered in the air after the waiter passed by out table. Especially the sweet onion, you could really smell it. So when our family orders came in, you could see, especially smell the usual. Soft white garlic rice, clear shrimp sinigang soup, stir fried sisig that tasted delish, and Max's famous golden fried chicken always tasty with sweet banana ketchup. As I dug into the assorted dished laid out on the table, there was this one dish that went unnoticed. I also noticed that my dad kept it for himself. It was a mustard-yellowish thick soup, pork, and dark green vegetables decorating the bowl. First I thought eww. I wasn't interested because I had other food that needed my attention. I was very hungry too. Before I could start my mom called out to me, "Addie! Try this." When I looked to where my mom was pointing, I saw the yellow goopy bowl of stuff. I knew better that to argue with my mom, so I scooped some onto my plate at moved it around. I thought it won't hurt, so I took my first bite of kare-kare, and from then on it would be something that I had to order every time I went there.
Soon I would learn that the dish was in my family since my grandma was little! When we went on our family vacation to Las Vegas my grandma who is always full of surprises cooked rice, garlic shrimp, ox-tail, and guess what? Kare-kare, right after we checked into our hotel suite. We checked-in smelling the familiar cooking garlic and onions that heightened my senses. Being far from home, and away from the home cooked meals, it was comforting to see something like kare-kare on my plate. Kare-kare is consistently made out of many ingredients, mainly crispy string beans, pechay, ox-tail, and crunchy peanut butter. Yes peanut butter, the special ingredient that makes everything taste so savory and sweet. The special ingredient that made kare-kare love it so much.
After being introduced to this dish, it appeared more in our family parties, gathering, and celebrations. I'd always watch from the table that faced towards the kitchen, my grandma doing her cooking dance that balanced the different things she was cooking, making sure none of them was left un-attened. I could see the kare-kare bubbling in a golden stew. I'd just help cut the vegetables. "Mama, how long have you been cooking this recipe?" I asked later in the future. "It's the same as I remember making it! I think." My grandma never really followed a specific recipe, she just put in whatever she felt like, or whatever tasted good.
Soon my grandma would pass down the talent of making kare-kare to her 5 children, but only one of them could make it with such passion. My uncle Robin lately has made his own version of kare-kare. It's a more orange looking soup with softer meat. My mom also has gotten into the tradition and has only made the basic off filipino cookbooks. "I would usually test it out with different kinds of peanut butter." She declares.
Kare-kare is a filipino dish that has made an impact in my foodie experience. That's why when I eat kare-kare, its not only a comfort food, but a memory that takes me back to the times where everyone would stop what they were doing, join at the dinner table and talk about their day.

Food of Choice: Kare Kare
I basically have an a plethora of comfort foods to choose from. From the Filipino adobo's to the American pizza's everyone loves, I chose the kare-kare dish that no one seems to notice. Every time we go to filipino restaurants we always have to order the kare-kare. Every time there's a family gathering, there's-- guess what? Kare-kare! So I might as well choose it as my food of choice. My grandma on my dad's side is known for her awesome kare-kare, and my uncle has been also known for making a mean version of my grandma's. My mom has also made numerous attempts to make her own. So it's a topic they occasionally like to talk about. So I'm going to interview my grandma the master of kare-kare in my family, to my uncle who seems to master his dish, to my mom who's the newcomer getting a feel of things. Point of views from every level of kare-kare maker.
